
Coral Vita co-founder Sam Teicher is building a business around restoring one of the planet’s most threatened, and economically valuable, ecosystems.
Coral reefs are often described in terms of their beauty. For millions of people, they represent clear water, colorful marine life and the almost otherworldly experience of descending beneath the ocean’s surface.
But reefs are far more than natural attractions. They sustain fisheries, support tourism, protect coastlines and provide a home for roughly a quarter of marine life. As they disappear, the consequences extend far beyond the water.
Sam Teicher, co-founder and chief reef officer of Coral Vita, believes protecting them will require more than public awareness and charitable giving. It will also require a business model capable of attracting capital and operating at scale.

“Just like we can plant trees for reforestation, we grow and plant corals for reef restoration,” Teicher said during a recent conversation on The Intelligence Report.
Coral Vita describes itself as a “for-profit, for-nature” company. Using land-based coral farms, its team grows resilient corals in months rather than decades before returning them to damaged reefs. The company also develops technology for restoration projects, relocates corals threatened by coastal construction and works with governments, hotels, developers, insurers and other organizations whose operations depend on healthy marine environments.
The model reflects a difficult reality: many environmental initiatives remain dependent on grants, donations and political cycles. Those sources of support matter, but they are rarely sufficient to address a global problem at the speed and scale required.
From a $1,000 Grant to a Global Operation
Teicher did not grow up expecting to become a coral farmer. Raised in Washington, D.C., he developed an early connection to nature through visits to the Chesapeake Bay, hikes in the Shenandoah Mountains and a family trip to Hawaii, where he first saw a coral reef at six years old. He began scuba diving at 13.
His early career, however, was focused primarily on climate policy and international development. He studied climate change from a political science perspective, worked on climate-adaptation policy in the Obama White House and supported a coalition of island governments focused on resilience and sustainability.
Between college and graduate school, Teicher worked with an organization in Mauritius, where he helped establish an environmental program that included education, mangrove reforestation and a United Nations-funded underwater coral nursery.
The project showed him that damaged reefs could be restored but also exposed the limits of the conventional nonprofit funding model.
The coral nursery relied on a $50,000 grant that was cumbersome, restrictive and ultimately not renewed. Teicher came away convinced that restoration needed a more reliable financial engine.
At the Yale School of the Environment, he met his future co-founder, Gator Halpern. Teicher was coming from policy and nonprofit work, while Halpern came from academia, where he felt as though he was “writing the obituary for the planet.”
Together, they began exploring whether business could provide another path.
Their idea started on a back porch and received an initial $1,000 grant from Yale. The money covered little more than flights to Florida and a rental car. Teicher and Halpern slept in that car while traveling from Miami to Key West to meet with experts.
Twelve years later, Coral Vita has grown into an international operation.
According to Teicher, the company has worked across seven geographies, including the Bahamas, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, the Maldives, Florida and the Dutch Caribbean. Its team of approximately 40 people includes local community members trained as coral farmers, as well as roboticists, artificial-intelligence specialists and leading marine-conservation experts.
Building a Restoration Economy

Coral Vita’s business rests on three central activities: restoration as a service, technology licensing and coral relocation.
Restoration as a service allows entities that benefit from reefs—including governments, hotels, developers, insurers and port authorities—to fund their recovery.
Coral relocation gives coastal developers a way to move reefs and individual corals out of harm’s way when construction threatens them.
The company also licenses hardware and software designed for marine restoration, including computer-vision systems, underwater positioning tools and equipment for transporting coral.
Corporate partnerships create another source of revenue. Coral Vita has worked with brands on campaigns that connect consumer products or marketing initiatives to reef restoration. Visitors can tour its farms, and individuals can support projects by adopting corals online.
Teicher said the company generated nearly $5.5 million in revenue last year and raised more than $8 million in what it described as the first Series A financing for a coral-restoration company.
Since winning Prince William’s Earthshot Prize in 2021, Coral Vita has grown more than 150,000 corals across 52 species, he said.
The company has also reported encouraging early ecological results. At one Dubai site, Teicher said transplanted corals recorded a 96.6% survival rate after one year, despite near-record regional temperatures. At other restoration sites, he said fish populations have doubled.
These figures represent company-reported outcomes rather than proof that restoration can reverse the global decline of reefs on its own. Teicher is explicit that it cannot.
“Restoration isn’t a silver bullet, but it is essential,” he said.
Reducing ocean warming, pollution, overfishing and other pressures remains critical. Restoration can help reefs survive and recover, but it cannot replace the broader work of preventing their destruction.
Reefs as Ecological Infrastructure
One of the most consequential shifts in environmental thinking is the growing recognition of nature as infrastructure.
A healthy coral reef is not merely an ecological asset. It is a living seawall.
Teicher noted that reefs can reduce wave energy by as much as 97%, protecting homes, businesses, ports and military facilities from erosion and storm surge. Mangroves provide similar protection along vulnerable coastlines.
That understanding is beginning to influence public policy, defense planning and insurance. New financial products are being developed around coral restoration, while government agencies and researchers are examining whether reefs and oyster beds can protect coastal installations more effectively and at a lower cost than concrete barriers.
For communities exposed to hurricanes and rising seas, this is not an abstract environmental argument. It is a question of lives, property and economic resilience.
Teicher saw that value firsthand while living through Hurricane Dorian in Grand Bahama. Mangroves, he recalled, “literally saved people’s lives.”
This framing may also help coral conservation move beyond partisan divisions. Beaches, fisheries and coastal protection matter to people across the political spectrum.
In Florida, Teicher noted, coral restoration has received bipartisan support even as the broader climate debate remains politically contentious.
The Case for Optimistic Realism

There is no shortage of alarming news about the world’s oceans.
Teicher said half of the world’s coral reefs have been lost since the 1970s and warned that more than 90% could disappear by 2050. In the Caribbean, he said roughly 80% of reefs are dead. In the Florida Keys, losses are closer to 95%.
Yet his outlook is neither dismissive nor fatalistic. He calls himself an “optimistic realist”, someone willing to confront the severity of the problem while continuing to believe that meaningful progress is possible.
He inherited some of that perspective from his father, who worked on Middle East peace.
Such work, Teicher explained, leaves little room for either naïve idealism or total cynicism. An idealist can underestimate history, grievance and suffering. A cynic cannot imagine peace at all.
The same balance applies to environmental recovery.
“Every hundredth of a degree that we reduce matters,” Teicher said. “Every resilient coral we outplant matters. Every new marine protected area that gets established matters.”
There are legitimate reasons for hope.
Engineers are developing robots capable of planting coral and seagrass. Scientists are identifying more resilient coral species. Insurers and investors are beginning to assign financial value to healthy ecosystems. Local employees who began as interns at Coral Vita have advanced into management positions overseeing aquaculture operations.
Nature itself can also recover with surprising speed when given the opportunity. During the COVID-19 shutdowns, ecosystems on land and in the ocean showed signs of renewal when human pressure temporarily eased.
The challenge now is to turn isolated projects into lasting systems.
Coral Vita plans to deploy modular “coral farm in a box” systems, expand into more countries and commercialize more of its restoration technology. Its broader ambition is to prove that environmental regeneration can create value simultaneously for businesses, governments, frontline communities and biodiversity.
The company’s work begins with coral, but the idea reaches much further.
If natural systems protect coastlines, sustain food supplies, support jobs and reduce financial risk, then restoring them should not be treated merely as charity. It should be understood as an investment in the infrastructure on which human prosperity depends.
Humanity relies on healthy nature far more than nature relies on humanity.
The question is no longer whether environmental restoration has value. It is whether our economic and political systems can recognize that value quickly enough to protect what remains—and rebuild what has already been lost.
